Are You a Realtor?

No! I am not currently a realtor. I get asked this question a lot. Mostly by people who want to confirm that I am not simply a salesman looking to earn a commission. Being a realtor is a separate profession and specialization within the real estate industry. There is nothing wrong with being a realtor, but I prefer to focus on what I do best. Namely, finding, renovating, and managing long term rentals. My education from the UBC Sauder School of Business’ Real Estate Division and my years of hands-on experience cover much of the same analytical ground, but licensing as a realtor has never aligned with my focus on investing and consulting.

I have the skills, education, and training to be a realtor and even run my own brokerage. However that is not what I do best, my focus is on building passive income streams for myself and my JV partners. In all honesty I am probably missing out on a larger total income by not starting my own property management and/or sales brokerage. However, there are only so many hours in a day and creating another full time day job for myself is not very high on my list of priorities. I have already had a 70+ hour a week corporate job and I am in no rush to engineer a new one for myself. My current focus on investing and consulting leaves me plenty of time to ensure that my work is the best possible quality while also pursuing goals in my personal life.
